Funerals

Funeral Masses in St. John's Church

As a parish, we would like to support you as we gather to celebrate a loved one’s funeral. For this reason, Funeral Masses in St John’s Church will be celebrated at 10 am and 12 noon from Saturday, January 1st 2011. There will be two hours between funerals in order to facilitate people sympathising with the bereaved at the end of the Funeral Mass, and to allow each funeral to be celebrated with dignity and reverence. On Sundays, the Funeral Mass time will be at 12 noon.

Death is always a tragic occasion. Losing a spouse, parent, family member, or close friend is undoubtedly one of life’s most painful experiences. While nothing can take away the agony of loss at this time, the Funeral Mass sends a strong message of hope. The following Readings, Psalms, and Communion Reflections all bring compassion and hope. People’s presence during a time of family bereavement can be a wonderful source of support. The local community is speaking not with words, but with their actual presence. We want you to know that the entire Parish Family shares your sadness and grief. We will assist you in every manner we can. We will pray for you and with you as well.

We are ready and willing to assist in any way we can during this difficult and sensitive time for the deceased’s family and friends. Church liturgies are scheduled with the priest on duty.

The Rite of Christian burial normally consists of

1. Reception of Remains in Church,
2. Funeral Liturgy in Mass or Funeral Liturgy without Mass,
3. Final commendation and burial.
Two of these ceremonies take place in the church:

1. The Reception of Remains at the Church
This is a ceremony of prayers, readings, and hymns. This usually takes place the evening before the Funeral Mass although very often the remains are received into the Church on the morning of the Funeral Mass.

2. The Funeral Mass
The funeral Mass sends a strong message of hope. There is a variety of Bible readings to pick from . Choose ones that have special meaning for you. Some members of the family may be composed enough to perform the Readings. However, if it would be an ordeal, feel free to ask family members or a neighbour.
.One reading from the Old Testament.
.One reading from the New Testament.
.Prayers of the Faithful. (Choose between 3 and 5.)
.Offertory: (Bread and Wine Only.)
.Communion Reflection (Chosen from the Reflections provided. See Below)
.Music: All music and hymns chosen should be appropriate to a religious ceremony reflecting our faith and belief in the person of Jesus who walks with us at every step in life’s journey.
.Personal symbols that reflect the life of your loved one are presented at the beginning of the Mass.
.Funeral Eulogy

Sometimes families would like to give a eulogy at a funeral. It is important to note that a eulogy is optional, and family members should not feel it necessary to deliver one. When the prayers have concluded, the best place to deliver a eulogy is at the graveside or crematorium. Many families, however, give the eulogy in church. If this is the case, it is done after the Mass.

3. The final Commendation and Burial are done in the Cemetery; for some, the final Commendation will be at the Crematorium.

Latin Mass in Tralee

The Traditional Latin Mass (1962 Missal) is celebrated once a month in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Rathass, Tralee under the provisions of Pope Benedict XVI’s motu proprio ‘Summorum Pontificum’.

The Mass is usually celebrated by Fr.Martin Hegarty on the last Sunday of each month. If there are any changes to the schedule these can be found at: http://latinmasstralee.blogspot.ie/
